John BREAKENRIDGE, who most likely died sometime before 1851, is the earliest Breakenridge ancestor I've been able to trace thus far. Banns for his marriage to Mary WATT were proclaimed in Hamilton, on 11 Dec 1831, and in Bothwell on 18 and 25 Dec 1831. The Hamilton OPR indicates that Bothwell was John's parish and Hamilton was Mary's parish. John was a "hand loom weaver" according to most of the marriage and death records of his children (Marion's death entry states that he was a gardener). I believe John (and his wife) died before 1851 because I have been unable to locate him in the 1851 census and his children are in the census living on their own or with extended family. |

Mary WATT was the daughter of Lancelot (or possibly William) WATT and Margaret MARSHALL. I found Mary's parents' names in her sister Margaret (WATT) Russell's death registry entry. |

Jane BREAKENRIDGE is my latest breakthrough in the Breakenridge family tree. I located the registry entry of her death in which her brother, John, is named as the informant of her death. I am now searching for her in census records. |

Janet CURR was the daughter of Gavin CURR and Janet McALLISTER according to the registry entry of her death on 6 Dec 1855. I have not yet located an OPR entry for Janet's birth. It seems likely that Janet's mother's name in the death register is incorrect. According to the Hamilton OPR, Gavin CURR was married to Helen ANDREWS in 1834, 2 years before Janet was probably born. Furthermore, Janet was living with Gavin and Helen CURR in the 1841 census and in 1851 she is listed in the census as the daughter of Helen CURR. Janet was not married to John BREAKENRIDGE, the father of her son, John [CURR] BREAKENRIDGE. She died shortly after his birth from effects of "Child-bed fever". |

Marion BREAKENRIDGE was the first sibling of John BREAKENRIDGE ([1836]-1885) I was able to track down. In 1851, Marion was living with her maternal aunt, Margaret (WATT) Russell, in Hamilton. Marion was married 21 Feb 1860, in Hamilton, to Robert THOMSON, with her brother John serving as a witness. |
|
Eliz. BREAKENRIDGE was living with her aunt Marion (BREAKENRIDGE) Thomson in the 1861 census. According to the census, Eliz. was 8 years old in 1861 and was born in Kilburnie, Ayrshire. I have been unable to locate any further information for Eliz. I have deduced that Eliz. was the daughter of an as-yet unknown son of John BREAKENRIDGE and Mary WATT.

|
John [CURR] BREAKENRIDGE was born to an unmarried mother, Janet CURR, on 17 Oct 1855. In the registry entry of his birth, John's birth surname was given as CURR, and his father's name is not given. In the registry entry of his death, his name is given as 'John BREAKENRIDGE, formerly CURR'. |

Helen MACBETH was first married to George WILSON with whom she had a daughter, Georgina. George died and Helen was a widow when she married John [CURR] BREAKENRIDGE, on 13 April 1886. Her name is given as "Ellen" in the registry entry of her marriage to John [CURR] BREAKENRIDGE. Helen was the daughter of Robert MACBETH and Georgina KNOX. She died in 1922. |

Robert MACBETH was the seventh child
born to Archibald MACBETH and Helen KIRK. He was
born in Lanarkshire (Glasgow), rather than Dunfermline, Fife, the birthplace of his elder siblings. In 1841,
Robert was living with his elder brother William and his wife Marion MCKAY
in New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Their father Archibald and sister Euphemia
(or "Euphan" or "Fanny") were living nearby and are listed on the same
page of the census. Robert was first married to Margaret Love sometime
around 1841 to 1843. I have been unable to locate a marriage OPR entry for
this marriage but I presume it took place in Lanarkshire, probably in Old
Monkland or nearby Barony. Robert and Margaret had 3 children. Margaret
Love died sometime prior to the census of 1851 as Robert was denoted as a
widower in that census. Please see A Brief History of the MacBeth/Kirk Family for more information about Robert and his family. |

|
Archibald MACBETH was born in
Dunfermline, Fife. Sometime between 1817, when his son William was born in
Dunfermline, and 1819, when his son Robert was born, he left Dunfermline
for Lanarkshire. In the 1841 census, Archibald is 70, and is living with
his daughter Euphan (Fanny) and her family at no. 19 Mud Engine Row, Clyde
Ironworks, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. I have been unable to locate
Archibald in the 1851 census, so I believe that he died sometime between
1841 and 1851. Please see A Brief History of the MacBeth/Kirk Family for more information about Archibald and his family. |

William MacBeth BREAKENRIDGE was killed in WWI and is buried at Bothwell Parish Churchyard. When I visited Scotland, Debbie, Julie and I searched the churchyard for William's grave but we were unable to find it. Amazingly, I found photos of his gravestone on the web. I've copied them here: 1, 2. Here is a bit more information that I obtained from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Helen MacBeth BREAKENRIDGE, is, I believe, the grandmother of my cousin, Hamish WILSON. She is the sister of my great-grandfather, John BREAKENRIDGE (1888-1946), who immigrated with his wife's family to Canada (Alberta) and then the United States (California).
Georgina Wilson BREAKENRIDGE, my grandma, was named after her father's half-sister (Georgina WILSON), as was my cousin, Hamish WILSON.
